2nd September 2019 - Ideas Factory - First week

Learning experience from today: Group work, brainstorming as a team, analysis of the brainstorming exercise in order to select one particular idea to develop into a single bigger project - narrowing down ideas to get to the best one, including feedback from fellow students. Group work is super creative, I love how everyones ideas come together to help make a concept stronger or more bold.

What I learnt: The importance of collaboration, listening and the importance of finding connections between themes that might seem unconnected at first. Also learning how to research how to turn an idea into reality- finding solutions and materials that could be used to create the idea.

3rd September 2019 - Ideas Factory

Benefits and challenges of working in a group? Benefits-  Working in a group allows a collaboration of ideas, expanding your initial thoughts into larger and more interesting concepts. Challenges- working as a group can sometimes lead to depending on others support and ideas.

How has your response to the project brief developed? Over the time of this project I feel my visual representation of my ideas have become more and more clear throughout my sketchbook, creating a clear flow throughout my work. Starting off with brainstorming within a group to then narrowing my ideas down to just one concept on my own really challenged yet provoked my individual thinking. The visual side to this project brief has evolved throughout the pages, becoming more intimate and detailed, picking apart the idea slowly, finding different challenges to find my way around when thinking of it as a physical, real, thing. Finding ways to jump from just an idea to making a physical model from sketches was difficult yet again, provoking. Having so little material to create this three dimensional model, the concept of it become even more fascinating to me, being able to find a way around the lack of material to create a three dimensional representation of my sketches was exciting.

How was your experience of displaying your work in progress? - Displaying my work was daunting at first but I quickly warmed up to the idea after finding out how open people were to sharing their process and ideas. I found it exciting how everybody was so interested in what others had to share. Having to write things about others work I found more of a challenge.. this is definitely an area I have to work on improving.

Did you find the post it feedback useful? - This technique I found very helpful. In some ways I felt it was almost like the whole room was collaborating on ideas and each others work and this was super cool to me! The concept that your fellow students can talk about your ideas and try and think of ways to improve them shows support and dedication to your fellow colleagues.

What did you learn today? - The importance of collaborating but also the importance of then using that information to create an idea on your own. Finding ways around issues like: lack of materials to create a three dimensional model and having to sketch your ideas super quickly in different styles, yet using clear visualisation to bring forward your idea.

4th September 2019 - Contextual Practice Session

Contextual practice is important as it helps you to process your thoughts in different types of forms. It opens up your imagination and allows you to create things you might not think you would. It helps you breach out into different strengths you might not know you had. Today we had our first Contextual Practice session, we were put into groups and then given a quote, we were told to think about the quote and consider the meaning behind it. At first I was a little confused but after brainstorming ideas with my table I realised that this was a great way to open up my mind to the more literate side of creativity. We were then told to turn our ideas into a small section of writing. Our table was given the quote: 'A wold without sound' after recoding what I had written down, I realised that this was a very cleaver way to get our thoughts running wild. My piece was about how the world would be, how it would change if we lost the art of sound, it brought out creativities that I didn't know I had.

5th September 2019

Today we were told to do a presentation of our work from this weeks brief, this was in order to conclude the Ideas project, I decided to make a three dimensional model for my piece, I feel, as drawing isn't my strongest area I find it much easier to communicate my ideas through a physical example of what I was thinking. The model I created wasn't as strong as I wished, but I was able to take some images of it that I felt worked quite well. The concept for my idea I thought was quite strong as at the beginning of the brief I wasn't happy with many of my outcomes. My peers seemed to like my idea, they found it very interesting, yet my sketchbook was a little hard for even myself to work out! What I have learnt from this experience is too try and create/visualise my ideas in a more simplistic way, have more white space around my concepts so that the flow throughout my work is easier to follow.

9th September 2019 - Lost Letters

Today I tried screen printing for the first time, the process was slightly stressful but I found it interesting how intricate and detailed you have to be for the image to come out the way you want it. When we were first given our letters, I was a little stuck with what I could turn mine into (I got given the letter A) but then I started to try and look at it as a shape and not a letter, I then came up with the idea of the Eiffel Tower but as there are so many small details to it, that wouldn't have been possible to print with red ink onto black. So I then came up with the idea of it becoming a building in a skyline. I then decided to add smoke coming out of chimneys from the buildings, representing the pollution factories create. I was very pleased with my result but felt I could have created the effect of more buildings being in the image a little better. We were then given the task to create a stop motion movie, this I found way more challenging. I found cutting out all the different sizes and pieces to create the movie a little slow, but I tried and i'm okay with how the finished product come out, I feel it has a nice vibe to it. Overall I found today pretty exciting! I'm really enjoying trying  out so many different forms of art.

10th September 2019 - Your Possessions

Have you changed your perception of what textiles is? -In a way.. I saw textiles as a more material based subject, not so drawing based, but the brief we were given today was really fascinating, I really enjoyed the continuous line drawing. The fact that we tried so many different ways of drawing was really good for me, I find it difficult at times to be confident with my pen on paper so what we did today was  perfect. I learnt to be less precious with my sketches, just getting my ideas down onto paper. I really enjoyed then turning my sketches into fabric designs by projecting our images onto our clothes or bits of fabric. Experimenting with laying and adding other images to create more dense visuals was super interesting and extremely fun. This is definitely something I want to do more of.

Projecting images onto two different figures, together.

11th September 2019 - Contextural Practice Session

Writing out your ideas is another form of visualising them. Its another way to get your ideas down but in another format. This can be very useful sometimes as seeing things in different lights can get you to have different opinions or views on the same subject, it opens up another form of creativity and helps broaden your perspective. Writing your stream of conscious down can get you to unravel thoughts in your head that you didn't know were there. It enables you to be more free with your ideas, basically setting your conscious free. It's also interesting to find out what you actually think about something when you don't think about it too much, you just let it happen. In our day to day routines there are many things we see, pass, have contact with that are connected to certain associations, for example traffic lights, we associate the colour red to stop and the colour green to go. Colours, vibes, atmospheres can automatically change what someone thinks of something. As humans we've learnt how to associate certain things with other things, for example seeing an advert with light pastel colours, with a young white female standing in the middle of it with a massive smile on her face will be seen differently to an advert advertising the energy drink 'monster' for example, using darker more harsh tones to attracted a completely different audience. The way in which we project our selfs will differ with different types of clothing, the colours we wear, the materials our clothes are made from, every type of style will then be associated to the type of person you are.

Notes taken in class about the power of advertising and how it influences people peoples decision making in what they buy and how they view a product.

Writing down whatever comes into my head about my views on fashion marketing and the effects it can have on people in this generation.

12th September 2019 - Revelation of Erasure

My perception of what fine art is has definitely changed since starting this brief. Today we were told to erase parts of an image or add to an image. I created a two page spread of images related to the theme of clothing. On the left there is an image of vintage washing machines and on the right an image of a Burberry fashion show. With these two images I decided to somehow take away parts of both images and somehow merge the two visuals together. In the middle of the two photographs I constructed a piece of it's own with the cutouts from the photographs. On the next page I then took another image and erased parts of it but placed the cut outs on the page next to the image in the place they would have been if I didn’t remove them. These two pages I absolutely love because the white space really frames the pieces and almost acts like its own gallery space.

I then decided to work on top of CDs, creating a collage from a fashion advertisement from Prada. I wanted to create a piece in which I looked like this could have been the actual image on top of the CD. I liked the idea of merging fashion and music into one.

Today I enjoyed the aspect of graphic behaviour in my work.

In this image, I used the cut outs from the original image and placed them in the same place as they were before cutting them out. This creates its own image for itself. Playing around with white space. I really enjoy the structure of this piece,  the white space creates its own picture without anything els being there. I love this as I feel the negative space creates a completely different dynamic  to the image.

Experimenting with light and urban landscapes through the empty spaces created by cutting out/erasing sections of the images. I love the concept of changing the image by taking parts of the photo away and adding existing backdrops to fill the empty spaces. I found this interesting as it was such a simple alternative to changing the dynamic of the image yet I feel this effect is quite dramatic.

I chose to place my sentence on the mirror of the girls bathroom, I felt this would be an interesting place as it would be too hard for people to not read it as its right above the sink where they wash there hands. The idea was to try and create some confusion when reading the sentence because its so out of context and doesn't match the surroundings its been placed in.

23rd September 2019 - Wear it

Wear It- Today we sketched ideas for jewellery, fashion accessories and footwear. We created jewellery from the sketches we drew and used basic materials such as gold wire to express our ideas into visuals and physical pieces. This task was interesting to me as creating a physical piece of jewellery that had specific design elements to it with such limited materials was quite challenging.

My friend Lotus and I collaborated on these pieces. The idea behind these pieces was to create an image that exposed the female body without it being provocative or exploitative. Our pieces represent how some women feel like they're trapped and can't express themselves and are limited to how much skin they can show and how woman are constantly surrounded by dilemmas related to their appearance on a day to day basis.  We wanted to create pieces that when worn women would feel empowered and strong. We also wanted the piece to be delicate this was to portray the idea that even though most men see women to be weaker than them because of what they see on the exterior doesn't mean that their worth and meaning is this delicate fragile thing that might be seen from the outside.

We then decided to create a performance piece, images above are stills from a short clip. The concept behind this piece is how social media influences some woman to feel like they have to be the same to successful influences and create an image that is similar to lots of woman on social media. It portrays the struggle between creating an image that people know will be liked, or being individual and having the doubt that it might not be what people want. It portrays the fight between being individual and being different from others.

24th September 2019- 'Do Undo Redo'

Do Undo Redo - Today we experimented with fashion communication and the styling aspect within fashion communication. We experimented with different materials and were given four words to use to then complete four looks - 'Light', 'Dark', 'Hybrid', 'Colour' and "Pattern'.  This has been my favourite workshop so far, I love the creativity within using materials and creating any shape on the body that you want. Experimenting with colours and how shapes fit together was extremely exciting for me. I loved how broad the brief was, you could create anything you wanted as long as it was on the body. I loved the whole process, the styling, finding a backdrop, photographing the looks, giving the images moods and atmospheres with different angles and lighting. My favourite part was the styling aspect, picking different materials and putting them together, creating one whole look from lots of different pieces, working with and creating different shapes onto the body was definitely the highlight to the course so far.

Light- We were given the word light and then told to create different looks referencing the word. This first look (face covered with orange material) was constructed from different materials, using different textures and shades. I kept to the theme of 'light' by using bright and pale colour. The focus of this look is the material that is draped around the models body- transparent perspex, the material covering her face was used to keep the contrast of colours. I am very happy with the colour theme in this piece. I also love the way the material is shaped on her body and how texture was created by playing around with how to attach it onto her body.

More experimentation of 'Hybrid' look. For this look we experimented with using different textured materials, using different dark shades.

'Dark' look. Using black bin liners, filling with other materials to create bag. Filling other bags with air and attaching to the body.

26th September 2019 - 'Your Surroundings'

Your surroundings- Today we worked with structural shapes and turned them into garments. We were told to draw a series of observational drawings and then pick aspects of the images that we thought were interesting and then turn into shapes we can transfer onto the body.

30th September 2019 - 'Your interpretation'

Today we did a fashion illustration workshop called 'Your interpretation' we experimented with a wide range of skills that you can you when it comes to illustration work. I found this workshop very helpful as it taught me to not be so precious when it comes to my illustration work. We were taught how to use colour blocking within our illustration which I found interesting. My favourite part of this workshop was creating our own collage materials from observation drawings of existing materials- we were told to pick two materials that we enjoyed, photograph them and then draw them. I loved this as I felt it really added our own style into our collage illustrations. I also really enjoyed creating a life sized illustration, using a real body of someone in our class and added details like string or tape to outline their body, this was intriguing to me because it made me see fashion illustration in a completely new way. I also enjoyed this aspect to the workshop as it was very hands on, you got physically involved with the illustration adding details to where you think needed it. With this work we were first told to white down a series of words that we thought related to our sketchbook illustrations, we then picked a selected few and had to use these words to then create the life sized illustration, this gave the concept structure and something to work towards.

16th September 2019 - Build it

Today we constructed shapes from bamboo and different forms of materials. We were asked to create any kind of structure and change and develop it as we wanted. I really enjoyed the aspect of changing a shape and adding dimension and texture to it. I found it really interesting when analysing our shape we had created to try and work out what angel was best to hang it from.

Adding colour and texture to it really changed my perception of it. Drawing our piece and imagining it in a gallery space was really interesting, working out where you would place a light source  so it would create an I interesting shadow. Deciding how big your piece would be and where it would hang in the room. My concept for my idea was an I installation piece that would be hung in a gallery space. There would be one light source which would create a really interesting shadow which would either project onto the floors or walls. The room would be dark, there would be coloured aspects on the piece so when the light was projected through, colour would be projected too.

I found the actual construction of the piece quite challenging as we had to work out what would fit on top of shapes and how we could build it to take the figure of it more interesting.

The colour choice within our piece was really interesting, this is probably my favourite aspect about the piece.

17th September 2019 - Message Vacuum

Today we did Fine Art, 4D. We did a number of different activities which involved taking photographs or making short videos. I really enjoyed the abstract qualities to todays brief. What we could do was so broad that I found it interesting when narrowing down the ideas to what we could actually achieve in the time we had. I really enjoyed experimenting with how we could shoot our ideas and how we could bring our concepts to life.

We create spaces around us that are made to human scale, so naturally everything fits into place, creating a space and using the human body to make the surroundings look unusual was quite challenging. Placing bodies in places were their not normally seen was intriguing and it brought a completely different atmosphere to the space we used. For example placing a body into a shelving area or squeezing into a locker completely changes the dynamic of the space, in the photographs we took of this taking place, its actually quite difficult to know where or what the location is, this is an aspect of today that I really enjoyed- creating images that were intriguing to ones eye.

Using the body to measure a space.

Experimentation with placing the body in places you normally wouldn't expect to see the human figure, this enables you to distort your perception of a space and change the way one sees it.

Top image is my final image photographed by my studio partner, bottom image is my partners final image photographed by me.

18th September - Contextural Practice session

Creative writing about an image I took on my Venice trip.

Classmates responce to my Venice writing

Making notes whilst discussing the sentence 'Is here a language of space (a space - language)?'

Series of images experimenting with projection onto the body.  The projections were from me and my peers sketches, we took in turn to project our sketches onto my body to create different patterns and experiment with how they would look if they were transferred onto physical material.

Working on top of CD's- recreating cover- mixing music with fashion/clothing, contrasting.

Two page spread of combined ideas, graphics in the middle of the page (circles with figures) combines both images together. Related theme between images- clothing.

19th September 2019 - Say it Loud

Say It Loud- Today we worked with the concept of fear. We were told to write our numbers down and then they gave it to a random person within the class. We were then told to have a conversation with this 'anonymous friend' about our fears. This was extremely interesting to me as we felt comfortable opening up to someone we didn't know just because we didn't/couldn't identify them with a face or name.

I then chose the sentence "I know a friend who's achieved lucid dreams" I found this interesting as after finding out what it was, I found it slightly scary as I see it as a form of unconscious control of the mind. We then had to place our sentence somewhere around the college campus.

First experiment using the word 'Light'. Using only one form of material. I find the texture in this piece very interesting, I love the details that the creases in the material creates. I feel the contrast of the delicate light, fragile material mixed with the harshness of the models red lipstick and jumper creates quite a dramatic effect.

'Dark' look. Sculptural image.

I found this brief interesting as the concept of using things that we see everyday, like buildings or interesting public structures and turning them into something we can put onto the body was quite intense. It also made me realise that fashion is influenced by everything that happens in the world, even if its something that is the complete opposite to what fashion is normally seen as.

14th October 2019 - Extension Project week

Today we started our extension project, we were serrated onto tables that had the title of the project that we wanted to extend, we were then told to visualise our ideas down into our sketchbooks and start to think about what we would do. I choose to extend the 'Do Undo Redo' Fashion communication project. I choose this project because it was one of the workshops that I loved so I wanted to experiment further. However, I love textiles and was torn between the two, so I decided to incorporate textiles into the fashion communication project. I decided to do this by sketching out ideas for garments I could make within the next week, I would then photograph the garment and base the garment around a subculture so I was also following the FC brief. So I started to sketch out ideas that I might take further and then I narrowed my ideas down to one that I would then start to construct the following day. My main inspiration for this garment was an artist named 'Ernesto Neto'.

First Sketches and ideas for my Extension Project

15th October 2019 - Extension Project Week

Today I began to construct my idea for my garment. I went out and bought all the materials I needed, which were; nylon tights, uncooked rice, string, plain cotton material and clingfilm to form little rice balls which would weigh down the garment. I began to contrast my idea and finished the first layer within the time we had in class. After lunch we were then told we had to present our work to the class by laying out our sketchbooks and lay out any three dimensional physical work that we had completed so far. It was really interesting to walk around the class and see how others had interpreted their projects, I found it inspiring how enthusiastic people were. Later that night I added more layers of the nylon tights with the rice balls in them to give the garment more structure and form.

16th October - Contextual Practice Session

Small paragraph of creative writing, based on an item I own thats the colour 'Beige'.

'How I work' - Contextual Practice session 16th October

Small description/working out how I work and what works best for me- putting myself into a pathway. This was very helpful, as I visualised my thoughts down onto paper it was easier for me to process how I work and what works best.

17th October 2019 - Extension Project Week - Presentation day

Today we worked up until lunch time, finishing off anything that we needed to get done, then after lunch we presented our work and walked around the college looking at other classrooms and what they had completed in the past week. I was very happy with my outcome, I was able to finish my prototype for my garment and was very pleased with the way it looked, I definitely want to improve and extend the idea but for the little time I had I was happy.

Final Product for my extension week work

Two page spread for presentation day - Extension Project Week

Concept and explanation to extension project

I created a garment that is flesh toned (the colour of caucasian skin) and its like a play on stretched out distorted skin. Its heavy and a burden to carry around. It's difficult to wear. Social media contributes to a feeling of being uncomfortable in your own skin- aiming for a 'perfect' body that doesn't exist.

I did some research on body dysmorphia disorder (BDD), its a mental health condition where a person spends a lot of time worrying about flaws in their appearance. The flaws are often unnoticeable to others.

In this day and age I feel social media has almost taken over the possibility and creativity to start subcultures.

CONTEXTURAL REVIEW - DRAFT ESSAY - UNIT ONE

The extension week was the highlight of the whole course, I enjoyed working independently. Having a longer time to really dig deep into the approach and the outcome was gratifying. Working with other students has stimulated me to think more deeply about certain aspects of my work and I’ve been encouraged to work faster and come up with solutions quickly. This has helped with decision making and my ability to be confident in the process. I have explored materials and practices that I have not been exposed to before and it has expanded my visualisation skills and my practical abilities.
Other moments of inspiration were ‘Your Possessions’ - I enjoyed the drawing part of this project which is surprising because historically I am resistent to drawing. Fashion Communications project: Do Undo Redo and Fashion Illustration: Structure and Form. I enjoyed everything about these projects.

Do Undo Redo - Fashion Communication Project
We were given a timeframe of 30mins to style, find a location, photograph and ten minutes to draw. The time structure of the task created an energy and I felt satisfied when I was getting things achieved and sorted. I responded to the freedom of this project. Happy to design and play with colour palettes that I like. I was in my element with the improvisational aspect. I enjoyed this project and we continued to work on this outside of the studio.
Your Interpretation - Fashion Illustration Project
This project was sketchbook based and opened me to a variety of approaches. The tutors taught us new techniques. For example, colour blocking, continuous line drawing, blind drawing and mixing these with collage. Taking this many approaches to illustrating helped me to realise there are many ways to communicate ideas. It was a liberating experience. Both of these projects were fulfilling and enlighting. The main difference between them was the first is three dimensional and the second two dimensional but both taught me about how to articulate ideas in an expressive and individual visual language.

I’ve been effected by Chiharu Shiota’s installations in the last couple of years. I respond to artists using textiles in a sculptural way. Drawing in space with yarn. There is a tension between objects that are taken over by the web-like strutures of her work. Delicate and encourage a deepening of engagement with themes that are always related to being a human.
There’s a similarity between Ernesto Neto’s work and Chiharu Shiota’s work. Both are installation based and whereas Shiota is working with thin, fine yarns Neto often works with ropes and other materials and fabrics that have flexibility and stretch. His work utilises gravity and suspension the fabrics filled with heavy materials that pull, stretch and distort.
Craig Green - I admire Craig Green’s forms and silhouettes. He works with the human body but opposes or exaggerates the natural form. I have taken inspiration from his bold approach to men’s fashion and the relationship between streetwear and high fashion.
I’m influenced by Rei Kawakubo’s approach to design. She sees herself as neither a designer or an artist but someone who was motivated to create clothing for herself because she couldn’t find clothes that she wanted to wear. Her creations distort the body and they exist in the world between art and fashion.
I am an admirer of Tim Walker and I was excited to see his exhibtion at the V&A. His work touches me in a way that injects ambition and a desire to create. His dedication to his vision and how he merges art, design, fashion and photography.

I loved the freedom to explore methods and ideas in the extension project and I felt enthused by the independence of the process. The chance to spend time researching the themes and experimenting with solutions and outcomes was very satisfying. The responsibility to push myself and make something that reflects my abilities and my ambition for the sort of things I want to tackle in my practice. I’m conscious that my interests sit somewhere between textiles, fashion communication and fashion and this project was a fashion communications project which I selected because we hadn’t really explored textiles specifically on the course and I wanted to be able to demonstrate my interest in materials, texture and form and I believe this project allowed me to do that. So whilst this project\s pathway is not textiles I still feel strongly that my sensibilities are stimulated by working directly with materials. I want to work with textiles but in a broad spectrum that could include fashion and even fine art.

The final outcome raises more ideas than it resolves. I was directly inspired by Ernesto Neto for this piece and yet I’m aware that there were other influences at work. My interest in the materials that include working with heaviness, weight, stretching and looking at the themes of body dysmorphia and burden lead me to realise that the piece is not finished. I would ideally want to add more detailing on the clustering of the details on the top of the dress and add more weighted elements to the skirt area. I would also like to create multiple pieces that work with other skin tone colour palettes.
